The origin of the three rondavels

The Three Rondavels sit in the heart of Blyde River Canyon. The rock formations, in the forms we see today, we first shaped around 300 million years ago although estimate do vary. The story starts many more hundreds of millions of years prior on the supercontinent of Gondwana which is represented today by South America , Africa , Antarctica , Australia , Zealandia , Arabia , and the Indian Subcontinent . During a truly terrifying period of tectonic upheaval this landmass splintered and at it's southernmost point steadily developed the Great Escarpment. The northernmost aspect of this landscape is the Drakensburg.

The first stage included violent volcanic eruptions around 180 million years ago that lay down the basalt needed, although the foundations of the mountain are estimated at over 2 billion years old, to make these mountains time immemorial. It's a phenomenal thought to imagine rivers of lava cutting the rocks and laying foundations in mountains full of rivers. And rivers are exactly what smoothed and shaped these sentinels into what we see today.

Over the last 100 million years the Blyde River, the Treur River and the Ohrigstad River have all coalesced in one form or another to great some of the most amazing rock formations South Africa has to offer. Waterfalls like the Lisbon and Berlin Falls as well as Bourke's Luck Potholes are all examples of this. But the most majestic of them all, in the heart of Blyde River Canyon, are the Three Rondavels.

A Little Background for the history buffs

Blyde River Canyon has always held a strong spiritual significance for the tribes of South Africa. Today the area is renowned as a seating place for the hereditary Rain Queen of the Balobedu people, not a ruler but a powerful healer and rain-maker according to custom.

In the early 1800s a time called the Mfecane, translating to "forced dispersal", arose as a result of the AmaZulu from the north as well as the Boers and the British from the south steadily displacing the tribes that had settled a few hundred years earlier and causing extreme in-fighting and migrations for resource purposes.

In 1845 King Mswati II rose to power over the Swazis and ran a military campaign that was very successful over the next 20 years when he dies in 1865, (much of the nations he carved out which stretched north to modern day Zimbabwe, east to Delagoa Bay in Mozambique and of course Swaziland was lost by his successors due to precious mineral claims by the Boers, the 1870's and 80's being the largest diamond and gold rushes in South African history.)

The Story of the Mountain

It was around this time when the Mapulana people led by Chief Maripe Mashile made a home for themselves in Blyde River Canyon. They hid themselves well from the Swazis for years but eventually in 1864 a massive Swazi raiding party was sent to exterminate the mountain's inhabitants. When scouts brought news of the huge raiding party Chief Maripe instructed his people to retreat to the top of a nearby mountain and to place as many large boulders on the edge as possible.

The Swazi understood the peril of battling straight up the mountain and waited for cover to come, camping at a nearby reinforced position along the Blyde River. The location at which they camped now has a holiday resort named Swadini after the name 'Swatini' which means 'the place of the Swazis'. Over a few nights a thick mist came in and under the cover of darkness the Swazi raiding party snuck up the side of the mountain.

The Mapulana people were vigilant and stood guard against the Swazis with rigid persistence and it was only by this determination that they sighted the raiding party almost atop them. At a quickly passed order the Mapulana people engaged their defenses and send boulder after boulder flying down the mountain side and crushed the Swazi forces, decimating them without injury to themselves. Legend holds that deep between the rocks the bones of the fallen lay, unretrievable and a silent testament to their comrades.

The remainder of the defeated Swazi raiding party retreated and instead of returning to their King for fear of his wrath they retired to the surrounding areas as farmers and their descendants can still be found in the area to this day.

The mountain upon which the battle took place was named Mariepskop after the brave Chief Maripe Mashile that stood firm the face of annihilation. The Three Rondavels, also known as the Three Sisters, are named after the legendary wives of Chief Maripe. Maseroto, Mogoladikwe, and Magabolle were apparently fierce women and although the Chief could handle wars, politics and leading a tribe, his wives were evidently the true power of the household.

Blyde River canyon is thought to have been formed some 240 million years ago through violent volcanic eruptions and vast rivers of lava, a mite or two younger than the 350 million year old Fish River Canyon in Namibia, and has had a human presence for up to 100 thousand years. In 1864 a famous battle took place betweeen Chief Maripe Mashile and King Mswati II's swazi raiding party. Where and What is God's Window

God's Window is located on the southeastern escarpment of the Klein Drakensburg mountain range. It one of the last (or first depending on how you begin) stops of the Panorama Route (along with Bourke's Luck Potholes and Lisbon Falls) and is a major tourist attraction in Mpumalanga.

It was named as such for it's amazing panoramic views. Stories full of strange phenomenon, visions and hallucinations revolve around this place. Humans are cruel and they kill, poison and trap many of the extraordinary creatures in these ecosystems often without prejudice. There are a number of organizations that do everything they can to bring the animals that can still be helped back to life.

There are a number of these extraordinary persons and if you have the chance you should visit them all:

The Cape Vulture Conservancy focuses on vultures as the name suggests. Vultures are renowned, as many hunted species are, by the traditional healing practitioners who value them for their ability to fly high which they believe can in turn give them the ability of foresight. The property is an impressive 1800 hectares and is home to over 650 breeding pairs of vultures providing a haven for the various species to grow their population.

The Moholoholo Rehabilitation Centre is located just outside the shadow of the mountain range. They deal with all sorts of animals from big to small. They often deal with orphaned rhino calves, poisoned owls and eagles, and of course their honey badger ambassador Stoffel is quite impressive. They've been running student volunteer programs since 1998 and along with rehabilitation they focus in a huge fashion on teaching guests as much as they can.

The Hoedspruit Endangered Species Centre also known as HESC started out as a cheetah sanctuary. Their amazing efforts have helped increase the big cat's populations resurge after years of poaching this beautiful creature. They also deal with large rhinos, servals, leopards, cranes and many other. Their specialization makes them the go to authority on many creatures and gives them power to exhibit these extraordinary creatures without taming them.

The Elephant-Moments Experience is a unique and humbling experience where guests can have close up experiences with elephants. The journey started in 1997 when a small elephant calf was saved, growing up in such close proximity it learned that it's handlers were no danger to him and kept returning. At first only himself but soon after with other elephants and the handlers have developed very personal relationships with these extraordinary creatures. The Breathtaking Vista At The Top Of Mariepskop Mountain

Mariepskop Mountain, named after the chieftain Maripe Mashile, whom with Chiloane leading the Pulana of the Pedi tribe stood their ground against the formidable Swazi raiding party under King Mswati II. The story includes a stand off for days whilst the raiding party waited for a mist to cover them all and they could sneak up the mountain but Chief Maripe had prepared for this and his people had prepared a great number of boulders at the top and at first sight of the soldiers sent a tumult of death down the mountain face. This battle known as ‘Moholoholo’ (we will speak about another name related tour later) which means ‘the great battle’ was the motivation for the naming of many features in this area.

Besides the history, the view is magnificent. In fact magnificent doesn’t encapsulate. The feeling is akin to standing at the end of the world. As if the entirety of existence stands behind you and at the bottom of the deadly drop begins an untouched paradise. Make sure to take the drive on a clear day in fair weather conditions as the dirt lumber roads up are untamed. Stay for a while, watch the clouds pour into the basin that is the lowveld, the sun dazzle the green fields and if you’re in just the right spot on just the right day they say to stretch your eyes east and though you can’t see over the horizon the Indian Ocean in Mozambique may glint into your eye if you’re lucky.

Go On A Game Drive Through Kruger Park

Kruger Park is busy but it’s beautiful. It’s a highly touristy spot and honestly if the season is far too busy we’ll recommend another game reserve outside of the Kruger Park for your convenience. If, however, the season is just right so you won’t be too bothered by the thousands of tourists that visit Kruger Park, attracted by its name and cultural significance, it is well worth a day trip even if it’s just to say you’ve been. The animals are plentiful, the roads well maintained and the animals are very used to the vehicles (so long as you don’t drive over their toes of course).

The tour lasts from early in the morning where you will be picked up from as near to your location as possible and will go all day until the late afternoon when you need to be dropped off. The vehicles are open safari ones so be sure to grab an extra bottle of water and some lip balm because the wind in your face all day in the heat of the African sun is quite draining but such is the price to pay for the up close experience of African wildlife. To see anything is a blessing from the land but you can be almost guaranteed some phenomenal elephant and buffalo sightings that will give you a true sense of these magnificent creatures.

Find Out If All That Glitters Is Not Gold

Ol’ Bilbo knew just what he was talking about and so did the voortrekkers that first found gold in these mountains. Not only are they magnificent, bold, beautiful and bathed in the blood of generations but they drip with gold. This area has been panned for gold since the early 11th century as far as archeological digs can tell but the beginning of Pilgrims Rest and one of the largest gold rushes in South African history sparked on the 22nd of September 1874. Although it’s been through thousands of hands there’s still a chance to find your own nugget in this tiny little town.

The Conservation Efforts Of Moholoholo Rehabilitation Centre

Within Hoedspruit are numerous animal rehabilitation centres all specialising in specific kingdoms through species (think back to class if you can remember what 5 terms come between, answer's at the bottom of the article). The reason we’ve particularly chosen the Moholoholo Rehabilitation Centre is because they have no qualms. For the big or the small, the adorable or the straight up terrifying all creatures in need of help have a hope here. Since 2019 they have stopped their animal interactions so as to support the South African Tourism Services Association (SATSA is a non-profit membership-driven organisation that stands for ethical animal tourism within South Africa) for the safety of animals and tourists across the country.

Be assured that going on one of their day tours, having a midday meal or simply interacting with the team that runs the sanctuary is a life changing experience for certain. Getting to know animals, how they live and operate and shedding a tear for the hardships they suffer under the human hand is a humbling experience that makes you question the superiority of our species. All animals are helped with the intention and using practices that keep them wild enough so that they may return to their natural environment. Unfortunately a few have been so badly injured, or often poisoned, that they cannot survive in the wild and have become ambassadors for their species under the care of the centre.

Floating ON The Bosom Of Blyde River Canyon

Amazing how poetic this land is, no?

The Blyde River Canyon is one of the most remarkable features of the world, never mind the lowveld. It’s the largest vegetated canyon in the world (imagine the grand canyon with trees) and the third largest canyon in the world. It is home to unique flora and fauna, and a special species of butterflies for aspiring lepidopterists. The dam itself was originally built in 1974 as a means of maintaining a reliable water source all year round for the farmers and mines that lie further downriver. Unfortunate. But it does however give visitors an opportunity to float up the gentle water source into the mountains and gaze up at the beautiful ancient faces.

The 90 minute tour is a favourite. You float between the valley faces, crocodiles and legevans soaking up the last of the sunlight on the banks as buck both big and small zip between the undergrowth lest a leopard spots them. The birds swooping high between mighty tree branches that have been allowed to grow since the reserve became protected in 1965, the only nearby equivalent being the forests of Magoebaskloof. Glide out and back and be sure to take a strong camera so you can capture the majesty of the ancient sentinels.

First off is trying to organise the camping site. Seasonal availability, weather conditions and sometimes even the mood of the owners are all variables. Although there are rugged chalets available it’s best to go in tents for comfort purposes. You’ll need to bring all your own food, wood, toilet paper as there are no purchasing facilities above. What you bring is what you got, make sure you’re self sufficient.

The mountain is formidable. Only the strongest drivers in the toughest cars can make the journey up the logging roads to the top. Once it levels out you’ll have no problem but ask any local and you’ll quickly discover that even big boys in big cars that drive through this wilderness on a regular basis are intimidated by the mountain side.

You’re all alone up there. In the event of an emergency you’ll have to be airlifted out due to the terrain challenges and good luck trying to find a signal. It’s often best to go in a larger group, and more fun too, as well as have some basic medical gear with you so you don’t start panicking. There is always danger in the beauty of this ancient mountain.

At the campsite itself you will find a river and views that are breathtaking. Trees over 4 stories tall soak up the water and challenge the sky. The mountain face is deep red and the vegetation is a vibrant green. Animals up there are unfamiliar with man and are skittish, your most common sightings will be birds which include the cape parrot and green dove. The river is wild and clean and jubilant. Swim, frolic and be merry as if you were the fairies themselves.

Marieskop's Military Base

Located near the peak of Mariepskop, nestled within the rugged terrain and dense vegetation, lies the strategic military base that has played a vital role in safeguarding the nation's airspace and protecting valuable assets.

The establishment of the Mariepskop Radar Station in November 1965 was part of Project Natsec, aimed at providing early warning of aircraft penetrating Transvaal airspace. An incredible technological feat for the time using cutting edge signals development.

Over the years, the radar station has undergone upgrades and renovations, evolving into a Sector Control Centre (SCC) and later becoming the Lowveld Airspace Control Sector.

Notable incidents, such as intercepting a MiG 17 and identifying unknown aircraft, highlight the importance of the radar station in monitoring and protecting the country's airspace.

Unfortunately after years of successful operation the military has fallen into disarray. Although the roads that surround it are still strong and usable the base has been looted over and over so that nothing but empty husks for buildings and a rotten fence remain.

It’s worth a walk around and although barely a skeleton remains you can still feel the productivity of it echoing across the generations.
